Evidence-Based Programs

With the aging of our population, many people who are living at home live with an array of chronic health care conditions.  Physicians, caregivers and adult day center staff work together to ensure that services and activities offered have proven to be effective in helping people stay as healthy, strong and active as possible for as long as possible.  Toward that end, adult day centers are increasingly incorporating evidence-based programs, EBP.

The most common definition of EBP is taken from Dr. David Sackett, a pioneer in evidence-based practice. EBP is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual.  It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.

EBP is the integration of clinical expertise, individual values, and the best research evidence into the decision making process for care. Clinical expertise refers to the clinician’s cumulated experience, education and clinical skills. The individual brings to the encounter his or her own personal and unique concerns, expectations, and values.
