Caregiver Support
In addition to caregiver respite, adult day centers offer a wide range of caregiver support services.
Adult Day Center staff works with center participants and their caregivers. The adage, “It takes a village,” has never been more true than when caring for a frail adult in the community. Day center staff work with the system of care; this might include paid caregivers, the physician and out of town family members.
Day Center staff can help with effective communication with health care professionals, funding sources, transportation services and potential out-of-home placements.
Dementia-related behaviors are often difficult to understand and work with. Day center staff can help caregivers understand how dementia impacts behavior and what caregivers can do to best respond. Many day centers off caregiver support groups where lots of practical information and advice is exchanged.
Day Center Social Workers help caregivers understand the process of loss and the importance of developing strategies to avoid caregiver burn-out.
