Workshop Summary:
The transitions in navigating oldest old age require that families
work together effectively. It often requires re-negotiating long
standing roles. Complex family relationships can make this
problematic as families struggle to help their elders find
safety without taking away autonomy & independence.
This workshop will explore issues such as
life review and acceptance, the ways families achieve intimacy
and how they learn to live with ambiguous loss. We will discuss
how life events of old age may reveal an undiagnosed mental
illness. Social service practitioners will participate in
discussions about the skills they need to help families maintain
function and constancy in a period of multiple transitions and
loss.
The format for this half-day continuing education seminar will
be a small group, interactive dialogue among colleagues. Prior
to attendance, participants are asked to read two articles which
will provide the framework for the group discussion.
Participants will be encouraged to bring case examples from
their practice settings. The goals of this seminar are to offer
continuing education that builds on immediate concerns of
practice and enables professionals to interact with others who
work with similar clinical geriatric issues.
This program also meets accreditation standards for Professional
