Falls and the Older Adult: A Holistic Approach to Identifying
and Managing Risks and Consequences

Workshop Summary:
Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths,
and the most common cause of non-fatal injuries and hospital
admissions for trauma. This course will address the many issues
that lead to falls in the elderly and will provide students with
various methods of risk analysis and options for managing those
risks. Emphasis will be on individualized client assessment and
prevention strategies that are realistic and functional. Time
will be spent identifying holistic after-effects of a fall on
the elder and creative approaches to minimizing future risks.
Presenter:
Vicki Anensen-McNealley, PhD, MN, RN, earned her masters degree in
nursing from the University of Washington. She holds a PhD in
holistic nutrition from Clayton College. She has vast experience
educating nursing students at a local community college, as well
as nurses and administrators in the assisted living and nursing
home arenas. She designs courses and educational manuals for
professionals working in LTC settings. She is currently Director
of Assisted Living for the Washington Health Care Association in
Tumwater.
